Circularity Initiatives

  • Colour palette comprises pigments derived from natural resources in the MENA region.
  • Upcycling of waste and discarded objects into artworks. For example in the exhibition Gateway: Maqam at Manarat Al Saadiyat, where he created artworks using repurposed materials that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. He also sculpted from leftover sawdust from carpentry workshops and fabricated pieces from reused discarded objects.
  • Exhibition design based on the upcycling of objects such as reusing old plinths and repurposing pallets as exhibition stands for his exhibition Gateway: Maqam.
  • Use of biodegradable paper for the publication related to Gateway: Maqam.

1. Activity and operations of studio and artistic practice 

 Included in the carbon scope:

  • Studio annual energy consumption (data for the kWh grid energy consumption was based on an assumption due to lack of accurate data from landlord)
  • Air and car travel
  • Hotel accommodation for activities not related to the external programmes below
  • Logistics related to artwork sales (transportation & packing)
  • Shipment of art production materials for the studio

Not included in the carbon scope:

  • Publications & printing (as none were carried out)

2. Participation in exhibitions, biennales, art fairs and residencies

2023 list of programmes:

  • Exhibitions (Art Here 2023 in Louvre Abu Dhabi, Gateway: Maquam in Abu Dhabi Art, Tabari Artspace booth in Art Dubai and Geopoetics of the UAE in Brussels)
  • Residency in AlUla

Included for each of these programmes:

  • Air and car travel
  • Hotel/ residential accommodation
  • Artwork transportation & packing

Not included in the carbon scope:

  • Energy consumption of the exhibition and other event venues due to lack of data, some projects being group shows; and the lack of control on the carbon impact of the hosting exhibition venue.
  • Publications & printing as the only booklet produced was printed on recycled paper. This had an impact of near zero tCO₂e and was therefore not included in my footprint report.

This carbon footprint has been developed by culture-led sustainability agency UreCulture SL, who support culture actors to step into leadership roles in regenerative sustainability thanks to the support of Tabari Art Space.
